In 2015 50 individuals participated in the “Sweat for GOLD” campaign as GOLD Champions. The “Sweat for GOLD” campaign is about ordinary people doing what they love and extraordinary to raise funds. These funds support GOLD’s vision to see a generation of young leaders in Southern Africa confronting the root issues of both HIV and youth risk behaviour, through uplifting their communities and imparting vision and purpose to present and future generations.
Lesley Lombard-one of the GOLD Champions- carried this vision as she ran in a 211.1km race in preparation of the Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon. She asked her friends and family sponsor an amount per kilometre she completed. This resulted in her raising a total of R5,275 (excluding the R1000 she donated to GOLD as part of securing a ticket to participate in the half marathon).
She reflects and says that “fun…and great excitement [was] created!” She also notes that “it was really nice to run while raising some funds for a really good cause”.
GOLD is thankful to Lesley for her dedication to “Sweat for GOLD”.
GOLD encourages anyone who is interested to convert their passion for running into an effort to make an investment into the future leaders of the nation and continent.
